Map 119, something of a legend in Road Rally World and something of myth. Full of historical landmarks, spectacular geographical features, Neolithic history and of course, those wonderful lanes, and let us not forget the all too famous “whites”! I’ve been competing on this map for years and it has a very special place in my heart, a map I could look over for hours and hours and see how a route may unfold, ponder; is that white really as rough as its mythical reputation suggests, why is there a chapel just there?! It is brilliant and in case you’re wondering, Yeap, in a driver! And you get to see it in all its utter glory , it’s even more rewarding, lanes lined with cow parsley, illuminated by the spot lights, limestone glistening, highlighting the road ahead… then a break in the wall, jump on the brakes, you’ve been looking for it for the last 100 yards, yet it still comes as a hidden surprise, a slot 90r into a white! A quick wave of the wand and you squeeze through the Drystone wall and the ground immediately changes! Where has that lovely gritty tarmac disappeared? Now the suspension is beginning to work, the Poti is being held that bit tighter and the spots are hunting the horizon up and down.. it’s bumpy! Initially you back off to save from damage, but experience tells you that you actually should press on, so a squeeze on the pedal and a rhythm is soon found, the right gear, the right revs and all is good, it’s an old farm track, its tree lined but I can see an old trailer off to my right . .”stop give way in 100, go left “ is heard from the left-hand seat.. is that it? That’s not rough! It’s interesting! Through 2 ancient stone posts and a quick stop, go left and the back-end steps out spectacularly onto the clean glistening road, ah the drystone walls to line the way, the white cow parsley illuminated ahead and the addictive aroma of mud and crap backing on the hot exhaust… that’s why it’s addictive..
